Middle School Science!!!
|
Science attempts to discover and define the natural world. Middle school science equips students with the content knowledge and Science & Engineering Practices required to become scientifically literate in the 21st Century. The philosophy of science education at Pansophia Academy includes active engagement in the practices as a means to learning content and developing the critical thinking, collaboration, and habits of mind necessary to become college and career ready. In short, students should learn science by DOING science. We will take an integrated approach in our middle school science curriculum in order to help students make sense of the natural world and develop an understanding of how the different scientific disciplines (life, earth/space, physical) interact with one another. Students will encounter components of each scientific discipline as they progress through middle schools, with both the content and practice increasing in rigor, complexity, and sophistication.
The class will be using the Next Generation Science Standards which were developed by teachers, scientists, and leaders in science and science education from around the country. I will be emphasizing scientific exploration and experimentation, instead of giving long lectures and expecting student to memorize lists of facts. Students will be engaged in classroom experiences while asking questions, exploring and discussing possible solutions and investigating science concepts using argumentation and being fully active in the learning process. This approach mirrors real-world science practices and allows them to be deeply engaged in the learning process.

Welcome to the wonderful world of science. I am excited to show my passion for science with my middle school students!!!! Throughout the year we will be working hard to figure out what makes this crazy world of our keep going around. Just how does the earth spin, the seasons change and why does our body do the amazing things it does are just a few of the questions that we will explore. I am looking forward to a fantastic year full of creative fun!!
